Why the book?

If you hear a mate (or yourself) saying ‘we had such a good relationship, and then she just upped and left’, then you can be 100% certain that is only 50% of the story. Something was wrong, only it wasn’t noticed until it was too late.

This book is about noticing before it's too late, and doing something about it. It's also about being proactive, and preventing some of the problems from developing in the first place.

Things used to be simple. A man knew what he was supposed to do in relationship to a woman. Maybe he didn’t make the grade, but at least he knew the stakes.

Times are tougher now. Successful relationship is no longer a matter of following well-worn traditional formulas. Whose rules do you follow? Your parents’, your peers’, your partner’s, the media, feminism, the mens’ movement, or your own?

About writing the book

Why did I write this book? It started as a consequence of a conversation with the partner of a friend; she outlined the reasons why she was just about to leave him. I felt quite disturbed afterwards, thinking about how yet another of my male friends was about to lose a fantastic dynamic beautiful woman because he just wasn't listening. I thought about my own mistakes and the high cost of them in my relationship. What is it about us men I wondered.

I woke up the next morning and the book was there, in my head. I sat down and wrote for 10 hours non stop, and the core of the manuscript was born. I spent 5 years working it, adding to it, getting feedback, and this seems to be a never ending process. I have enjoyed each stage, from writing to publishing, though of course finding the time is always the most difficult part.

Publishers

The book is published in Spanish by a Mexican publisher; he has divided it into 5 smaller books.

It is published in Australia by Finch, and available from bookstores.

It is available in India, and is soon to come out in the Chinese edition.

It started out life as a self published work entitled The Desperate Man's Guide to Relationship. The next edition was titled How a Man Loves a Woman. The name was changed when Finch took up publication.
